The $25,000 grant will support the purchase of a customized vehicle that will transport animals in safety and comfort from shelters throughout the region to the Oregon Humane facility in Portland. Last year, more than 6,300 Second Chance pets from 92 shelters in Oregon, California and beyond came to Oregon Humane to find new homes. These pets had literally run out of time at their existing shelters. When they arrived at Oregon Humane, they received any needed medical or behavior care and were offered for adoption with no time limit.
A Life Saved
“Every pet that is transported to Oregon Humane as part of the Second Chance program represents a life that has been saved,” said Sharon Harmon, Oregon Humane Chief Executive Officer. We’re grateful for the PetSmart Charities grant, which will help keep our Second Chance team on the road and helping pets,” said Harmon.
“Every pet in need deserves a shot at finding a lifelong, loving home,” said Jenny Aho, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities. “By working with organizations like Oregon Humane to support their Second Chance pet transport program, we hope to give more pets a better chance at finding their forever families.”
Pet Transport is one of PetSmart Charities’ ten new grant categories designed to provide year-round opportunities for animal welfare organizations and non-profits to apply for funding support. Funding from PetSmart Charities can help to cover the costs associated with pet transportation, veterinary and shelter care and vehicle maintenance and modifications. With the help of its animal welfare partners like Oregon Humane, since 1994, PetSmart Charities has helped more than 7.6 million pets in need find forever homes.
