Oregon Humane set a new adoption record yesterday when it found a home for Panther, making the lucky nine-month-old cat the 11,522nd pet adopted from Oregon Humane in 2015.
That number represents the most pets ever adopted by Oregon Humane in a single year since the new shelter facility opened in 2000. Oregon Humane, which has adopted more than 11,000 pets for six consecutive years, finds home for more pets than any other single shelter facility on the West Coast.
When the shelter closed for the night on Dec. 31, Oregon Humane had found homes for a total of 11,620 dogs, cats, horses and small animals during the calendar year, breaking the previous record of 11,521 pets set in 2011.
The high adoption numbers come with an equally record-setting adoption rate. Oregon Humane typically finds homes for 98% of the pets in its care, one of the highest percentages in the nation. Oregon Humane never puts a time limit on how long an animal remains available for adoption.
Panther was adopted Tuesday evening by Belle Hofstetter and Benny Herbert, residents of Portland’s Powellhurst neighborhood. When the couple met with Panther in an Oregon Humane “get acquainted” room, they were impressed by the young cat’s good looks and demeanor. “He’s affectionate and gave us head butts and kisses. He’s pretty cool,” said Hofstetter.
