Dog Adoptions Resume at Oregon Humane

Portland, Ore. – Dog adoptions at the Oregon Humane are scheduled to resume on Saturday following a nine day pause. Out of an abundance of caution, all dog adoptions, viewings and intake were halted after a group of dogs transported to Oregon Humane from Oakland Animal Services were exposed to dog flu.

The dogs were moved to an off-site facility and continue to receive care from dedicated Oregon Humane staff. “Our team mobilized quickly to contain the virus and protect the other dogs in our shelter,” says Brian August, Oregon Humane Chief Operating Officer.

During the past week, the dogs in the shelter have been quarantined and tested for dog flu. Based on the results, Oregon Humane veterinarians, in consultation with Dr. Sandra Newbury, a national expert in shelter medicine and dog flu, have determined that the virus did not spread.

As an extra precaution, all dogs currently available for adoption at Oregon Humane have received a canine influenza vaccine thanks to a generous donation from Zoetis.

“We are very grateful to the public for their patience and support,” added August. “Our highest priority is the health and well-being of the pets at the Oregon Humane as well as the pets in our community.”

Additional information on dog flu can be found on the Oregon Humane blog and on the American Veterinary Medical Association website.

Oregon Humane hours for viewing and meeting pets are 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday. The shelter is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd., Portland, OR 97211. Directions here.
